10/17/22 – OCTOBER HORROR MOVIE PICK #17 – X (2022).

I’ve expressed my love for Ti West’s work on here numerous times in the past, with The House of the Devil, The Innkeepers, amongst others. He’s back with X, an unapologetic throwback to the 70’s grindhouse slashers of the past. There is sex, gore, and all the things you’ve come to expect from those movies. Although, yes, there’s also a bit of a twist thrown into the mix. Here is the brief IMDB synopsis:

In 1979, a group of young filmmakers set out to make an adult film in rural Texas, but when their reclusive, elderly hosts catch them in the act, the cast find themselves fighting for their lives.

This is a spoiler free list, so I won’t be talking about any of those aforementioned twists in specifics. But I will say what I enjoyed about X is how it definitely took an established trope, and spun it around a little bit. Where you’ll really notice the modern day feel is how every step of the way it’s the women calling the shots. Even when the men THINK they are, look again. The men are all just tools for the men of this film. I loved how seedy it felt on the surface, then when you start to delve into it, it’s something way different. There is some great suspense, some terrific gore, and a few “what the hell?” scenes thrown in for good measure. Now, many of you know after this film came out, it was announced it was simply the first film in a planned trilogy. The first sequel is, well, let’s be honest, a bit of a spoiler in itself. But hey, if you haven’t seen X by then, it’s your own fault. Give it a spin and enjoy this nice throwback with some updated twists along the way.

Where to Watch: Streaming on Showtime and Fubo, or PPV.

Food/Drink Pairing: A bowl of texas chili and a can of PBR.

  1. OK, so I have to disagree with you on this one. I love Ti West, and although I love his throw back to the 70s grindhouse on this film. I feel like this movie was just an excuse to film a porno with some horror in the mix. I am a HUGE slasher fan, and at the end of this movie I was left with a huge “WTF did I just waste my time watching” question. Not a fan. I am really not sure what the high ratings on this movie are all about. I know I’m going to be criticized for saying this (much less writing them down) but in my opinion, this is one of the worst horror movies I’ve seen in a while.

    1. Haha I love it. Yep, I can actually understand why some feel this way. I guess I enjoyed it because it went a direction I don’t think I was expecting with an extremely elderly slasher villain. But that’s what makes this fun. We’re not supposed to agree on everything!
