Yesterday was all about how horror movies can be fun and entertaining. Today, let’s flip that script and deal with the darker side of horror. Super Dark Times kinda tells you what you’re in for with the title, so that part should come as no shock. But trust me, this movie is chock full of other twisted surprises. Here’s the brief IMDB synopsis:
Teenagers Zach and Josh have been best friends their whole lives, but when a gruesome accident leads to a cover-up, the secret drives a wedge between them and propels them down a rabbit hole of escalating paranoia and violence.
Super Dark Times is one of those “downward spiral” types of movies where one bad decision begats another… and another… and so on. At times it’s difficult to watch. You find yourself yelling at certain characters for making horrible choices. But it’s also insanely compelling for those same reasons. I don’t want to give away any of the twists and turns of this movie, but I will say it definitely changes vibes as you watch. Feelings toward characters alter. This is not a film that steers away from pushing a few boundaries. I’ve had many conversations with friends about where it goes in the 3rd act, and how the ending relates to the opening scene. Some liked it. Others didn’t. But I think it’s a great example of a movie that tried something a little different. Regardless, I think it’s a well executed film that I think a lot of people will like.
