The Night House took Sundance by storm a few years back (and was sold for a LOT of $$$). The fact that it premiered at that festival makes complete sense because there’s a lot more going on in this movie than simply scares. This baby is chock full of deeper meanings and emotions, specifically the emotions dealing with grief. Here is the brief imdb synopsis:
A widow begins to uncover her recently deceased husband’s disturbing secrets.
This movie is a great hodgepodge of genres. You’ve got a nice drama about a widow struggling with her husband’s death. You’ve got a great mystery dealing with the circumstances around his death. And you’ve got a great horror film filled with incredible visuals and some great scares. I can see why this movie caused such a storm at Sundance because The Night House is one of those crossover movies where everyone has something to pull them in. Even non-horror viewers will enjoy this one. The acting is top notch across the board. And I mentioned the visuals before, but let me double down on that. The idea of using vacant and/or negative space to create a silhouette for the supernatural figure is a stroke of genius. I really loved the way this movie played out. A wonderful mystery with a devastatingly accurate portrayal of grief. I really high class and fantastic film.
Where to Watch: On Demand rental, as it just barely left theaters.
Food/Drink Pairing: An Oreo cookie and it’s lookalike, a Hydrox cookie.
