Much like Caveat from a few days ago, this is another gem I blindly discovered just perusing Shudder. It had a great poster, and to be honest, I just love Irish horror films. They always have such a heart and charm to them that I quite enjoy. And holy Hell does Boys From County Hell have that in spades. Here is the brief imdb synopsis:
A crew of hardy road workers, led by a bickering Father and Son, must survive the night when they accidentally awaken an ancient Irish vampire.
In a lot of ways, Boys From County Hell has a similar tone and feel as An American Werewolf in London. The plots aren’t the same at all, but the vibes are similar. There’s a lot of great horror mixed with some wonderful humor. And both have a lot of heart. Now I know that we’ve all seen a million vampire flicks, but lo and behold, this one actually came up with a twist on the vampire (or specifically how he feeds) that I’d never seen before. I love being surprised at originality. The bloodletting scenes are exceedingly creepy and effective. The small town, as well as all the drama that goes along with living in a small town, is dead on. The father/son dynamic holds a strong emotional tie. Overall while this film may feel small in budget, it doesn’t feel small in stature at all. Enjoy yourself this entertaining Irish romp with a twist on the vampire tale you’ve never seen before.
Where to Watch: Streaming on Shudder and AMC+.
