10/28/20 – OCTOBER HORROR MOVIE PICK #28 – Happy Death Day.

Much like I did with Zombieland a few days ago, I have to do the same thing with Happy Death Day. For some dumb reason, I put the sequel, Happy Death Day 2U, on this list last year before the original. While I love both movies, the first one is just unbelievably witty, smart, and beyond entertaining. Here’s the brief imdb synopsis:

A college student must relive the day of her murder over and over again, in a loop that will end only when she discovers her killer’s identity.

If you were like me when you saw the trailer or read the synopsis, your first thought was, “I’m so over the Groundhog Day ripoffs.” But I’m telling you, do not let that dissuade you. If you pawned this off as just another copycat, you’d be missing one of the most original scripts set in the slasher universe that’s been made in a long damn time. There is so much to love about this movie. You can focus on the numerous deaths. Or you can focus on all the clever time-repeat lessons. Plus, there’s all the fun supporting characters, notably the sorority sisters, as well as a dynamite baby mask that the killer wears. But what I loved about this movie the most was the relationship between the two main characters, and their blossoming interest in each other as the loop progresses. They are so damn likable, that you want all the best for them at all times (even though it doesn’t start that way for Tree.) I find myself recommending this movie to people all the time because it’s PG-13, so anyone can handle it, and it’s a real crowd-pleaser in every way. Then when you’re done, you can watch Happy Death Day 2U and have your brain fully explode.

Where to Watch: I actually don’t think it’s streaming anywhere, but it’s definitely worth a couple bucks on any of the PPV’s.

Food/Drink Pairing: A birthday cupcake and too much booze.
