I was going to save this one for tomorrow, since Halloween has essentially become the gateway to Christmas (sorry Thanksgiving.) But I always pick an extra special one for Halloween, so instead this absolute blast of a movie gets the Halloween Eve spot. First thing’s first, you should know that Anna and the Apocalypse is a horror musical. Yep, musical. Here’s a little something you may not know about me. This horror aficionado also loves musicals. Make fun of me, I don’t care. There’s just so such massive entertainment value involved in a musical. So imagine my delight when I heard that there was a horror zombie musical coming out, and better yet, that it was really good. I’m here to say it’s better than good, it’s fantastic. Like many of the best musicals, Anna and the Apocalypse packs so much entertainment value into its 90 minutes. It deals with Anna and her high school friends, not only dealing with typical senior in high school problems, like upcoming colleges, bullies, and an insanely mean dean… but now you have to throw in the fact that the entire town has been taken over by a virus and now almost everyone is a zombie. Now, you have all the typical zombie tropes here, such as if you’re bitten by a zombie you become a zombie, and all that. But now you put all of it to nicely choreographed musical numbers where the cast can actually sing. I’m telling you, it’s fantastic. There’s really something for everyone here. Sure, there are musical numbers, so if that turns you off, you will hate this movie. But if you enjoy them, then you can also enjoy some amazing fight sequences (one in a bowling alley that is especially fun), some fantastic gore that includes beheadings and buckets of blood, and a mass amount of zany UK comedy. Yeah, this is almost more of a comedy than anything, but it also has a lot of heart. The characters are extremely likable, which goes a long way. Here’s the scoop, if you hear zombie horror musical, and it sounds intriguing to you, then you will absolutely love this movie. It’s just so damn fun. But if those words make you furrow your brow in anger and dismay, then there’s little chance you’ll have as much fun. Still, I highly recommend giving it a view. It’s just so damn charming and fun that I can’t figure out why everyone wouldn’t enjoy it.
