10/12/11 – 2011 OCTOBER HORROR MOVIE RECOMMENDATION #12 – The House of the Devil.

House of the Devil

This is a recent release that is completely near and dear to my heart. And if you worship horror movies from the late 70’s/early 80’s like I do, it will have you under its spell as well. There’s something about horror flicks back then that made them feel more visceral. In Freudian terms, they were much more id than ego. And my personal favorites from that era were the satanic movies that were all the craze for a while. Well, sadly that era left and I’ve pretty much watched them all. But lucky for me, Ti West gave me a little modern day present in the form of The House of the Devil. I swear to God this movie was personally made for me. It is made to look straight out of this era of movies, right down to the tiniest detail. Babysitter, isolated house, creepy couple, you do the math. Look, I will give this warning, this movie is not for everyone. It’s not huge on plot or story. Not a lot happens. It’s very slow. But in movies like this it’s all about the atmosphere, of which it has in spades. Personally I think it’s a feat of genius. Listen, if you’re reading this blog, more than likely you’re a horror fan. Well, I’m here to tell you that this movie was MADE for horror fans. Forget completely that this film was made in 2009, turn your inner dial back to 1980 (where cell phones didn’t exist, TV’s had dials, and people still hitchhiked), and just trust me. You’ll really enjoy the ride.
