10/2/11 – 2011 OCTOBER HORROR MOVIE RECOMMENDATION #2 – The Serpent and the Rainbow.

Serpent and the Rainbow

Sometimes a movie works because of one very simple reason. In Serpent and the Rainbow’s case, it always worked for me because the premise and just pure creepiness factor. Voodoo has always been one of those things that truly gets under my skin. And setting it directly at the source in Haiti just ups the uneasiness a hundred notches. This is one of Wes Craven’s lesser mentioned films and in my opinion that’s a shame. With a movie like this, its goal is to pull the viewer in and make them feel the same sense of dread as the characters. Well, this baby absolutely fits that bill; the dread is absolutely palpable. And hell, in a movie that features a paralyzing drug that turns people into living zombies, situations where people are buried alive, heads being screwed off, snakes, spiders, and everything in between… I think I can speak for all men who have seen this movie when I say there is a sequence that is so disturbing that it will make every man cross his legs and close his eyes. *Shivers*
